2019 in Sport

2018 was a fantastic year for sport that included France’s victory at the football World Cup in Russia. Cheltenham Festival – March

This is the pinnacle of national hunt racing and is always a stunning spectacle and atmosphere across the four days. The best horses from Ireland travel over in what is the greatest week of the year for many racing fans. It is already looking a very open festival this time around, but is an event not to be missed, with attendances always full each day. The event itself is now fast approaching with exciting building amongst sports fans, with the Gold Cup on day four the key race of the meeting.

Rugby Union World Cup – September/November

Japan host the Rugby Union World Cup in what is set to be a memorable event. New Zealand are heading in as the defending champions and will be looking to extend on their three victories to date. They will start as the strong favourites going in and are around even money to defend their crown. The key threat could come from Ireland who have been a very strong side in recent years. This is a sporting event not to be missed at the end of 2019, in which France will then host in four years’ time.

Athletics World Championships – September/October

Another sporting spectacle in 2019 not to be missed is the Athletics World Championships, which is taking place in Doha, Qatar. Qatar will certainly be looking to put on a show, so this is expected to be a memorable occasion. This will be the 17th edition of the IAAF World Championships and will be taking place in the newly renovated multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium. Can they produce a similar tournament to that of London 2017, which was a great success? Doha was selected out of Barcelona and Eugene (Oregon) for the tournament, with the latter now set to host the following 2021 tournament. There is a large number of remarkable young athletes coming through worldwide, so this is another event this year you do not want to miss as anticipation continues to build.
